School: St.George’s School Munich

Globalised learning and a diverse curriculum

The Farulnizam family, from Malaysia, relocated to Munich with their daughter, Fiona, in late 2021. They have a history of living in different places, having previously lived in New Zealand, the Middle East and Australia.

When searching for an international school for their daughter, after many months of lock-down in Malaysia, the family visited a few international schools in Munich and were impressed by St.George´s.

"We wanted a school that could provide globalised learning and a diverse curriculum. We liked that St.George’s had open spaces and playgrounds which provided opportunities for young children to play and interact, as well as easy to reach from the city centre.”

Upon joining St.George´s, Fiona and her family found a very welcoming environment. They were pleased with the small class sizes, the quick friendships Fiona formed, and the supportive teachers.

"When we met Fiona´s teacher shortly after Fiona had joined her class, the teacher spoke about Fiona in a way that felt as though she had known our daughter for such a long time! We knew then that our girl was in good hands. We did not have to be worried.”

Over the past 2 years, Fiona has thrived academically and socially at St.George´s, developing friendships with peers from around the world. Fiona regularly learns phrases in her friends´ languages to show them how she cares.

"There has never been a day when Fiona did not want to go to school. She is always excited to go”

says her mother. St.George´s has had a positive impact on Fiona´s development and learning, according to her parents.

"She always has interesting stories to tell in the evenings and her curiosity has grown. We are impressed by her ability to absorb so many new things at her age – having only turned 7 years old recently.”

The curriculum guidelines provided to the parents at the start of each term are very useful for Fiona´s parents to prepare and provide support for her learning at home.

"Seesaw* is really helpful for us to see our daughter´s progress. We get access to recordings and don´t even need to wait for mid-term events, such as the Learning Showcases in school, as we can follow Fiona´s progress regularly.”

When asked about what she appreciates most about our school, Fiona´s mother notes how seamless it was for Fiona to make friends and immerse herself in her learning.

Munich has now become a wonderful new home for the family. They enjoy the city´s green spaces, safety and beauty of the surroundings.

* Seesaw is a powerful platform fostering student engagement and capturing their learning in a portfolio that is shared between teachers and families.
